Bio Brussels

This article reviews the market for organic food in the local Brussels, Belgium area, as of 2022, including a partial listing of shops, suppliers, and nearby farms. This listing is not complete. It does not endorse any supplier.

Nobody sponsored this survey. Buyer beware. Of course, you can buy some organic food in supermarkets, but the smaller shops tend to be closer to their local suppliers, more flexible, and more transparent with their customers.

Produce, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds

Brussels has many small, independent organic food shops. My favorite is Bioshop Den Teepot on rue Chartreux 66 near the Bourse. They have been there for years. Operated by three brothers, they are oriented towards vegans, with a selection of fresh, organic vegetables and fruits, grains, beans, and legumes in bulk, and some packaged foods. A related vegan restaurant upstairs is open for lunch only, when they are open. Bioshop is a loose affiliation of independent organic health food shops in Belgium.

Carnivores are not excluded at Den Teepot, but Barn Bio chain carries organic beef, ground pork, and chicken. They have four shops in the Brussels area and one in Antwerp. To their credit, Barn Bio lists their suppliers on their website. A local supplier is Ecodal in Lennik, who supply them with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, and other fruit and vegetables. Another local supplier is BioVibe, a wholesaler of organic fruit and vegetables in Sint-Katelijne-Waver near Mechelen. A further local supplier is EcoVeg in Assenede, who supply paprika, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli. Still another supplier is BioGourMed SPRL in Wavre, who supply them with organic produce from Spain. Barn Bio also carries locally grown mushrooms from Le Champignon de Bruxelles and locally produced organic chocolate from Nao. Their prices are competitive with the supermarkets. To keep costs low and avoid packaging waste, they ask you to bring your own container and packaging. You can also buy containers there.

Färm is another chain of organic shops in Brussels, Leuven, and elsewhere in Belgium. Their business name is pronounced like “ferme” in French, spelled like “farm” in English, but with a German umlaut. This is a cute name, but it can be confusing at first, if you do not already speak and read German, French, and English. They are clearly aiming for the European market, and their prices tend to reflect this. They have some fresh produce, but they tend to fill their shops with packaged goods. They appear to list their local produce suppliers on their website. Interbio is a distributor of organic vegetables and fruits that supplies Färm and other retail customers all over Belgium. They also have a transparent supplier list.

Since 2017, Bees Coop, Van Hovestraat 19, Schaerbeek is a food co-operative. In exchange for a purchase of no-dividend shares for at least 100 € and working three hours every four weeks, members buy fresh fruits and vegetables and other products.

Roots Store, Rue Franklinstraat 44, near Schuman, has a concept of traceability. Traceability is a legal requirement of food producers, distributors, and retailers, so this is not unique to them. They say that they know where all their items come from and how they are made. They carry fruits, vegetables, nuts, bulk cereals and legumes, dairy, and cosmetics. They accepts orders for locally sourced meat until 10 am for delivery Friday or Saturday.

Since 1988, still another local chain of organic food shops is Sequoia, but they do not list their suppliers. They appear to be oriented toward vegetarians and vegans only. If you bring your own washable and reusable containers, you can get five percent off their prices of vegetables, fruits, and bulk products. Similarly, Origin’O is another local chain of organic shops, but they do not list their suppliers either.

The Food Hub is still another organic shop. They buy mostly from small- and mid-sized local farmers, many of whom are local. They list their suppliers on their website. They also take orders online and deliver. They have a shop in Molenbeek on the canal near Metro Comte de Flandre and another shop in Leuven next to the train station.

Competing with the retailers is La Rigaudière, an organic farm near Tournai. They receive orders online from Monday to Wednesday, and then they deliver to various drop-off points in Brussels. You can choose your basket of vegetables. They offer a variety of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, including imported ones.

Seizoensmaak is a local farm, Ursene 14, 1840 Londerzeel that delivers their fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs, eggs, and meat to various pickup points in the Brussels area. They have a webshop, and you can also pick up your purchases from them at their farm.

Vertd’Iris is a local gardeners’ cooperative in Anderlecht, near the Erasmus hospital. Headed by Fred Morand, they promote urban agriculture and employ mostly volunteers. They also install raised bed gardens of recycled plastic. They offer (limited) training programs for gardeners, and they an online shop for fruits and vegetables. They deliver to various local pickup points or directly for a minimum order of 150 €. If you buy a share in the cooperative, you get a 30% discount on the price of their own production. (Their webshop also offers products from other local producers.



One source of organic meat in Brussels is Coprosain, a farme’s cooperative that favors small-scale, pasture-raised production. They attend various weekly farmers’ markets in Brussels.

Another source of meat in Brussels is Boucherie Dierendonck. They also operate a restaurant in Koksijde. They have a small chain of shops, including one at Rue Sainte-Catherine 23. They also sell online, and they advocate small-scale, pasture-raised production.

You can find local farms via Linked Farm. They try to connect local producers to local shops, restaurants, and wholesalers.

Kom à la Maison

Kom à la Maison is co-operative restaurant (non-profit organization) located at rue des Champs, 46, Etterbeek. They offer organic, vegetarian meals Tuesday to Friday at 12h30, Thursday evenings at 19h30, and Sunday afternoon at 13h. They buy fresh produce from a local farmer. They also receive unsold produce from lBio Barn. They buy dry goods, such as spices, from Bees Coop. Like Bees Coop, they expect you to work for them, taking part either preparing the meal, starting at 9h30 or else cleaning up afterwards. They ask for 15 € per meal, but they will take less, if you are in a financial hardship (no documentation of hardship required). Around 10h30 each weekday, they post the menu for lunch that day on their facebook page. For reservations, you can call is 0456-411 974. They promote themselves as a “restaurant particpatif au prix libre“. They found the concept in France. They also offer team-building exercises (cooking together) to local businesses. They have been in business since 2021.

At Kom à la Maison, the management is frank to say that they are a non-profit, but they also put their own capital into the fixtures and furniture, such as the ventilation system, the refrigerator, the stove, the washing machine, the countertops, the utensils, acoustic panels, and so on. If this concept appeals to you, if you are local, they can also be transparent about how they set up their restaurant and how could set up a similar restaurant youself, including financial details.

Be aware that as of this writing they depend on subsidies and donations for more than half of their operating costs.

They supply The Barn Bio with shitake, maitake, oyster mushrooms, and other mushrooms. They feed their mushrooms the dregs of organic beer and wood pellets (nitrogen and carbon). They also offer two-hour guided tours of their 3.000 square metre mushroom farm in the cellar underneath the former Anderlecht slaughterhouse. They show you an overview of their process and production. If you eat mushrooms, it is worth a tour. Above ground on that site is the open air covered market (between Metro Clemenceau and Delacroix) open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 7h to 14h. There you can buy mostly conventional vegetables, fruits, meat, and fish.

Ferme Nos Pilifs is one of the very few farms still left in the nineteen communes. They hired the disabled to pack and ship weekly boxes of their production of vegetables and fruits (Ateliers Protegés). The catch is that you do not get to choose what you receive in your weekly delivery.

De Groentelaar is a small local farm that also supplies the The Barn Bio Market. They grow organic vegetables in Pepingen. Since 2020, they raise chickens and produce eggs.

Terre en Vue

They have a cooperative that sells shares and then buys lands for small-scale farming. According to their latest annual report, “Les terres s’acquièrent actuellement pour environ 10-15 000 €/ha pour des prairies et pour environ 30-50 000 €/ha pour des terres de culture. À noter qu’un observatoire officiel des prix des terres en Wallonie a été mis en place en janvier 2017 sur l’initiative du Ministre de l’agriculture, avec la collaboration des notaires. Le rapport 2020 relatif aux transactions 2019 donne un prix moyen à l’hectare de 28 000 € pour des terres situées exclusivement en zone agricole. Le loyer correspondant s’élève à peine à 200€/ha/an en moyenne sur la Wallonie.”

“On about 2,5 hectares, we are three (Florence, Lucia and Manu) to cultivate a traditional kitchen garden (about 50 different vegetables) certified organic. Our baskets are 100% “home-made” from June to December. The other months we offer vegetables from elsewhere. We made this choice for several reasons. First, we do not have an exceptional storage capacity. This means that we can’t do a lot of “storage” vegetables (mainly roots). Second, winter baskets are often mostly cabbage, and the goal is not to make you sick. RadisKale is a cooperative including a staff of six growers on a 1.5 hectare plot of land located in Neerpede (Anderlecht), supplying year-round vegetables but also fruits, berries, edible flowers, herbs and mushrooms to the Brussels market.


About 55 KM south of Brussels is the city. There, once a year in September, Nature et Progrès, a Belgian group promoting organic gardening, organizes a conference called “Valeriane”.
